VEGASMAS IN BLACKBOOK

I'm very excited to see my name once again associated with BlackBook Magazine. About a year ago, I wrote a story about the Kennedy School in Portland. And recently, I wrote a story for the online version about my trip to Las Vegas last Christmas.

Peep it here.

THREE PART SERIES IN THE LA WEEKLY

I was lucky enough to travel to Mexico City with a Long Beach band called On Blast. The group played the initial Goliath Festival and the LA Weekly allowed me to write about my experience. Check out the three-part series below.

Part one.

Part two.

NEW STORY IN THE LA WEEKLY

I really, really, really like seeing my name in the LA Weekly. Not sure why, but there's a sense that I'm doing what I should be doing with my life whenever I see my work published with them. So it comes as no surprise that waking up and finding my new story in print is a good feeling.

Check it out here.

POEM PUBLISHED AT HAGGARD AND HALLOO

I stumbled across this online poetry site called Haggard & Halloo. They publish a lot of great offbeat stuff that isn't your run-of-the-mill poetry. I read the site for a few months and finally got the courage to submit. Two days later, they used one of my poems.

Click here to read "Looking Up."

POEM PUBLISHED AT BURNING SHORE REVIEW

I am excited and proud to be part of the first round of posts at Burning Shore Review.

The site is run by Rob Woodard, head honcho of Burning Shore Press, a Long Beach publication house. And thanks to Rob, I am one of the editors.

Click here to read my poem, "Tim."

VEGAN GOODNESS

I'm very excited to report that my first feature in Vegetarian Times can be found in the July/August issue. The fine folks at VT even ran a picture of me in the Contributors section. This is a first for me, so thanks VT.

Oh, the story in question involves "Bizarro" creator Dan Piraro. It was a great conversation as he was very funny, informative and down to Earth, three things I enjoy in people.

Also, I am a regular contributor (again, with a picture of me) to a vegan blog called Veggie Thing. Basically, I eat awesome vegan food, then write about it. It's a pretty sweet gig.

I submit items once a week and the site is updated constantly, so check it out.

NEW CAT

April is National Poetry Month and to celebrate, I'm going to try to post as many poems as I can. Of course, now that I say that, this will probably be the only one.

Enjoy!

weeks I fed this homeless little monster
and sat outside on the porch for the off chance I might get to pet him
finally my day came and it felt like a real accomplishment
like for once I earned something unquantifiable
yet more rewarding than the largest paycheck
or a kiss on the cheek from the prettiest girl at the party
experiences like these are few and far between
but I wish they weren’t
I could be a homeless man like my new cat was
if it meant every day would be a new connection of this magnitude
I never wanted anything – still don’t
I never needed anything other than air and water and a good night’s sleep
and somehow I’ve accumulated a two-bedroom apartment’s worth of stuff
if there was a fire or an oncoming storm
the first and only thing I’d grab
(assuming the cats were safe)
is my journal
you see,
estate sales are for dead people
but I’m thinking of having one anyway
take my shit
please
and give me more
new cats

JOHN FANTE CALENDAR ITEM IN LA WEEKLY

Here's a tiny calendar item I wrote for the LA Weekly regarding an event celebrating what would have been the 100th birthday of author John Fante. If you haven't read him, you should. You'll thank me later.

FINALLY HERE

To anyone reading this, hello.

My name is Ryan Ritchie. I am a writer from Long Beach, California. I have finally entered the blogosphere and wouldn't I know it, the water's warm.

I am going to use this blog in a professional manner, whatever that means. Basically, I'll link stuff I write to this blog so my work will be in one concise place.

I've also got a "real" website at www.ryanritchie.net.

Thanks for stopping by.
